Sailing regatta hits Nelson Dozens of yachts tacked, jibed and generally had a great weekend of racing during the first few days of the annual Nelson Weekly Nelson Regatta. The regatta is the highlight on the local sailing calendar and saw dozens of sailors come to the region from around New Zealand. The action started on Friday night with an exhibition race of the newly-included trailer yachts. On Saturday, the smaller boats

were back in the water for the competition proper, while the early finishers of the annual Wellington to Nelson race entered Nelson Haven. On Sunday, the trailer yachts completed their competition while the keel yachts entered the first day of their competition with sailing outside the cut. The regatta continues until Wednesday this week. For more details see page 29.
Stoke centre needs more parks Stoke’s proposed $6 million community centre is one step closer to completion with a resource consent hearing taking place last week, but a shortfall of on-site parking may put pressure on what is already a tight space. A publicly-notified resource consent for the multi-use facility at Greenmeadows Reserve was lodged in September last year,
and a hearing took place last Wednesday and Thursday at Nelson City Council. Deputy mayor Paul Matheson told the Nelson Weekly that the plan didn’t comply with parking, but he couldn’t comment any further until the process was complete. According to the proposal, the existing 27 space car park is to be extended to accommodate a total of 48 spaces - but this

locals. “Not everyone, especially young families and the elderly, can afford to join a tennis club,” he says. “Currently, there are five club courts and two public courts, and as a member of the Stoke Tennis Club, I have seen people using the two public courts nearly every time that I have played on the club courts.” The proposal would also involve the demolition of the existing changing sheds and ablutions block. A decision on the hearing is expected sometime in February.

Man hospitalised after chemical incident
A man was taken to Nelson Hospital after being overcome by fumes, and roads were closed in central Richmond on Monday morning, after a chemical incident at Richmond School. Emergency services were called to the school on Cambridge St at around 9am after a maintenance
worker noticed strong chlorine fumes coming from the pool complex. Sections of Oxford and Cambridge streets were closed off by police who redirected traffic. Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade’s senior station officer and incident controller, Blair Hall, says two
crews from Richmond, two from Stoke and two from Richmond were called to the school. He says a mix of chemicals used for treating the pool, including chlorine, became volatile and overpowered the man. Nelson Weekly understands the man’s condition is not serious.

Election year has only just started but the rumours and guessing about who may stand against mayor Rachel Reese have already begun. Rachel has confirmed she will seek another term as the region’s mayor but the jockeying for her job from others has already started. Councillor Brian McGurk hasn’t ruled out standing for mayor again, as he did in 2013, and the Nelson Residents Association are expected to put forward a candidate outside of those currently on council. There was a rumour circulating that former mayor Aldo Miccio would stand again in 2016, but he has told Nelson Weekly that he has no interest in contesting for his old job just yet. He moved to Auckland with his family after losing the 2013 election and says he could run for office again, just not this year. “It’s a definite `no` for this coming election but maybe sometime in the future, possibly when both councils finally amalgamate,” he says. BODY FOUND IN MAITAI: The body of a man has been recovered from a river in Nelson on Saturday morning. Police were called to the scene at Maitai River, off Halifax St, just after 6am. They say there were no suspicious circumstances. A small bag and a bicycle were found nearby. Police said although they did not believe there were any suspicious circumstances behind the man’s death, they asked for anyone who may have seen him earlier to come forward. MAPUA BOOMING: Mapua is becoming an increasingly popular hot spot with thousands of people checking out the redeveloped area every day. Tasman District Council counted people going to the wharf on several days in late December and January. The council recorded about 7500 pedestrian movements (people both entering and exiting) in the wharf precinct on December 28, almost 9000 on January 2 and about 6400 on January 17. The Council’s Shed 4 development opened in mid-December, adding a further six retailers to the existing cafes, restaurants, galleries and shops. Councillor Brian Ensor says Tasman’s Great Taste Trail had also added to numbers in the area, and it was great to see the community using the new Waterfront Park for picnics and leisure.

SCHOOLS TAGGED: Richmond schools Waimea College, Garin College and Salisbury School have all been hit with “acts of stupidity” over the summer break. The three schools have been subject to graffiti and attempted arson over the school holidays and the culprits have yet to be caught. Waimea principal Scott Haines says Waimea College has already been hit three times. “The latest was graffiti on our school gates but we had an attempted arson event some stage between

Christmas and New Year when a small fire was set up against one of the buildings in the heart of the school, that’s the most concerning of the three.” Scott says he is really disappointed and frustrated. “Schools exist to meet the needs of our community and to serve the people around us. It’s no surprise that the schools aren’t funded at the level they need to be and each of these events just takes money away from students in classrooms and detracts from our ability to make a difference for the kids.” “These acts of stupidity end up costing the school but ultimately end up costing students, it’s not cool.” All three incidents were photographed and reported to the police and the school’s insurance company, but no one has been found responsible.

Restaurants left short-staffed Andrew Board Bars and restaurants in Nelson say they’re struggling to find staff with their busiest month of the year fast approaching. Nelson Weekly spoke with several restaurant and bar owners who say finding enough front-ofhouse staff and chefs is becoming a real problem and it will only get worse as university students begin to leave the region within the next few weeks. Fords and Panama owner Garry Ford says finding suitable staff has been his biggest headache over the summer. He says it’s tougher to find good staff now than in any time over his 40 year hospitality career. “We have a lot of people coming through the door for jobs but a lot are foreign and aren’t here for long, or their English isn’t very good.” He says he employs around 40 staff between the two restaurants and there seems to be a lot of staff movement between restaurants in Nelson. “Because everyone is looking for staff, workers are tempted to look elsewhere.” Vic Brew Bar general manager Phil Williams says it’s also an issue

Over the last five years that we’ve owned the business, the size of the pool has decreased. We’ve managed to pull together a really good team this summer, but finding the team has been a lot harder than other years.” He says there is a “massive” shortage of chefs in Nelson and to counteract it they are trying to help train up the people who they’ve got. “If I had chefs leave, then we
would be in trouble.” He says that even Winz have struggled to find chefs. “I’ve spoken to Winz and there has been very little coming through there.” He says bar and wait staff are typically university students who leave in mid-February and are difficult to replace. Garry says he’s tried to advertise on Trade Me but that is often a waste of money. “It costs $120 and often we don’t get any replies.” February is, traditionally, the busiest month of the year for the
industry and Garry says, with his experienced university staff leaving, he’s had to look hard for replacements. “We have eight students with us who are all heading off in February and they are skilled, experienced, good staff.” Garry says finding trained and experienced chefs is also a battle. “I know the polytech puts through all these chefs, you wonder where they are going.” Howard Morris is a consultant with the new Waka bar and restaurant on Collingwood St, where Hanger 58 used to be. He says finding experienced staff has been a huge problem. “The former head chef here has been rehired, but finding a sous chef is proving to be very, very difficult.” He says the pay is good for people with the right skills but Nelson does struggle because it has such a busy season in summer and such a quiet season in winter. “In summer we need extra people and in winter you are hard pushed to give your core staff enough hours. Finding people who are willing to work for a short time, and with good skills, is hard.”
Drugs seized at Nelson Airport A woman was arrested at Nelson Airport on Monday, carrying an ounce of methampletamine. Police arrested the 36 year old Nelson woman after she flew from Auckland with the drug, which is also known as P. Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnston says the arrest came as the result of police investigations into the supply of the drug in the region. The woman was travelling alone with the drugs, which has an estimated street value of as much as $20,000. She will appear in the Nelson District Court today charged with possessing methamphetamine for supply and offering to sell methamphetamine.

Nelsonians are more likely to go camping than other kiwis, according to a recent survey. The study was commissioned by a campervan company to look at kiwis’ holiday habits and it showed that Nelsonians have the highest percentage of tent ownership in the country. Sixty-three per cent of Nelsonians own a tent, far more than the national average of 47 per cent. The survey was conducted with over 10,000 respondents across New Zealand. The results come as no surprise to co-owner of MD Outdoors, Mike Smithers. “There’s definitely a camping culture in Nelson,” says Mike. “It’s a passed-down family tradition of just going out and doing it, the parents do it and then the kids get the bug. They’ll go out, grab a two person tent and throw it in the car as teenagers, and tramp as adults and then take their kids out camping in a canvas tent as well.” He says a lot of Nelsonians head to places like Momorangi Bay every summer. “My business partner has an annual family holiday in Totaranui, while best friends of ours will pick up the canvas tent and

pitch it in Totaranui for two weeks almost every holiday.” Kaiteriteri Beach Motor Camp manager Dennis Petch says the campground is choc-a-block with locals this summer. “We get a lot of people coming up from Christchurch but we always get plenty of locals from the Nelson-Tasman area.” Torpedo 7’s stock controller Anne Duboffon says that locals definitely buy a lot of tents. “We’ve sold 571 tents over the last year, 160 of those were in December alone. “They’re all different types, but the most popular ones are the small hiking tents and the big canvas tents that people just chuck in their car and pitch up for a week or two,” says Anne. The survey also revealed that Nelson has the highest percentage of travellers, with 65 per cent of people saying they have taken a 10-day trip either overseas or in NZ in the last year. The survey was commissioned by RV Super Centre.

Car rolls into river, just misses swimmer

Simon Bloomberg A swimmer in the Roding River in Aniseed Valley had a near miss when a car plunged off a cliff at the White Gates Reserve and into the water just three or four metres from where they were standing. The parked car rolled down a slope and over the six metre cliff into the river at the popular swimming and picnic spot last Thursday at about 3pm. A swimmer in the river below watched in horror as the car flew through the air and plunged into the river just metres away. Police said it was fortunate that nobody was hurt. The swimmer was lucky the car missed them while the passengers had got out of the car before it started rolling down the slope towards the cliff. The owner and passengers of the car, which had only just been purchased and was uninsured, tried desperately to stop it rolling over the cliff, but it was going too fast. "It started moving and I opened the door and tried to pull up

The streets of Nelson will be overrun with comedy and fun this week as the annual buskers festival swings into action. The Nelson Buskers Festival runs from Thursday until Sunday with performances on Trafalgar St and at the Boathouse. The performers are coming from all corners of the globe, including Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and Australia. Their acts range from ninja juggling to acrobatics and unicycling. The daytime performances at the top of Trafalgar St run on Thursday and Friday from 11am to 2.30pm and on Saturday from 10.30am to 2pm. The Buskers on Church Steps performances are on Saturday

I think it's great, but after recently doing a trip of the South Island I have to say that Nelson needs better promotion. I was impressed with Hokitika. We felt like we were wanted there as visitors. There were maps and routes set up with all the attractions for day trips. The signage was excellent and lots of places to see and things to do. Upon returning to Nelson, we noticed a real lack of adventure and sightseeing tourism here compared to the rest of the south. Also, Nelson has the worst public toilets by a country mile. If we are going to bring the people here then we need to be super-organised to host them. Nikky Lohmann.

It’s time to take the strain for the annual Tug of Peace challenge. Now in its 17th year, the competition raises funds and awareness for the Nelson Tasman Hospice, which relies on community donations and Government funding to operate. Nelmac have dominated the mens’ event over the past six years and are challenging other teams to take them on next Wednesday, January
27, at 12.30pm in upper Trafalgar St. The teams they have come up against in the past include Talley’s, Sealords, ANZ, the Police and Fire services. “We really appreciate the support of the companies who take part in the event and allow their staff to participate,” says Hospice fundraising manager Paul McIntyre. “Nelmac have been big supporters but it’s about time someone took them on and claimed brag-
ging rights as the toughest company in town. “It’s through events like these that we can raise funds so that the hospice can continue to offer such an excellent service to the people of Nelson and Tasman.” ANZ staff will be walking through the crowds with donation buckets. • Tug of Peace, kick off 12.30pm at Upper Trafalgar St, Wednesday, January 27.

Kites of all shapes and sizes took to the skies over Neale Park on Sunday for the 25th annual Nelson Summer Kite Festival. The event is the longest running provincial kite festival in New Zealand and 2016 was a huge success, says coordinator and member of the Nelson Kite Club, Ted Howard. “It was much bigger than we expected, it was bigger than last year, much bigger. We suspect somewhere round 40005000 people came through, it was pretty busy all day.” Around 35-45 people made
up the main display of kites in the centre of the park, which included a massive whale and dolphin, a dog, a dragon and a unicorn. Kite-fliers came from around the country to attend the day, plus, visiting fliers from Luxembourg, Singapore, UK, USA, Australia and Holland. Ted says that while the event isn’t promoted as an international festival, it’s getting such a good reputation with international fliers, who have experienced overseas kite festivals featuring crowds of around 70,000.
Organisers also took the opportunity to seek donations from the public and were overwhelmed with the response. Ted says they have received some great feedback from the kite-fliers who are more than keen to come back to next year’s festival. “So we’ll take a deep breath, crunch all the numbers and see if we can maybe raise some more club members and go from there.” Organisers of the Nelson Summer Kite Festival would also like to thank all their sponsors and supporters for making the event possible.

Golfing legends Sir Bob Charles and Susan Farron will be gracing the Nelson Golf Club this Friday, as special guests for the Water for Prosperity charity golf tournament. The tournament is raising funds for the charity’s upcoming trip to Zimbabwe this June to install clean drinking water for residents in the town of Torwood. It will be the second time Sir Bob Charles has been involved in the tournament, but it is the first time Susan Farron, PGA professional and president of the New Zealand Profes-
sional Golfers Association, has come on board. Water for Prosperity spokesman David Barnes says are “delighted” to be hosting both golfers this year, who will also be holding a complementary coaching clinic for entrants at 11:30am before a shotgun start at 12:30pm. “It’s a great opportunity for people to meet Sir Bob – he’s a living legend,” says David. “It’s hard to get anyone better.” David says they are aiming to raise US $50,000 in order to install another five water bores in Torwood, which will add to the 20 they have already installed in the town since September 2013. holes provide clean water for the residents, who previously had to walk hours to the nearest stream to collect dirty water. “Prior to us going there, much of the town had no electricity or water and children spent 10 hours a day fetching water from streams, which are highly polluted,” says David. “The people are incredibly unhealthy from it and riddled with water-borne diseases.” Each bore hole costs NZ $7000, taking roughly one day to install. And, according to David, the resident’s reactions are priceless. “They come out in their hundreds and they’re crying and singing when the water comes up,” he says. “They can’t believe it -

it’s absolutely life changing. The work we’re doing there is huge. Not only do they have clean water for drinking, but they can use it for irrigation and grow their own crops.” David reckons they’ll need to go back next year to put in another five bore holes, but in the meantime is looking forward to what should be an exciting tournament on Friday. Organisers of the Sarau Festival in Upper Moutere are taking the approach that 'if it’s not broken, then don’t fix it,' with this Sunday’s ninth edition featuring all the same “triedand-true” attractions that have made it one of Nelson’s most popular events. The festival was first held in 2008 as a celebration of the arts, crafts and food of the Moutere Valley. It has always featured a number of popular foodie events that reflect the importance of blackcurrants to the district’s economy and organiser Jenny Leith says this year is no different. “We’ve got Angela Kernohan from Melrose House Cafe doing the Sujon cooking demonstrations this year,” Jenny says. “The cooking demonstrations are always one of the big attractions so there was no point in changing anything. We did have some new ideas but decided it was better and easier to just focus on the tried-and-true formula that has worked in the past.” Angela’s demonstrations are scheduled to start at 3.30pm and 5pm. Also included in Sarau’s successful formula are the popular blackcurrant cooking

Jenny says the competition is free and entries need to be taken to the competition tent by 4pm on the day. New Zealand Hops chief executive Doug Donelan will also hold a seminar in the Grown in Moutere tent at 4pm.
The photo competition is another popular event and people attending the fair will be able to win a prize by identifying where a selection of photos from around the Moutere Valley were taken. There will be over 100 stall holders selling food, drinks, arts and crafts as well as live entertainment. There will be plenty to keep the children entertained as well, with a range of activities in the Kidszone. The fair will be held at the Moutere Hills Community Centre on the Moutere Highway and starts at 3pm and finishes at about 9pm. Entry is $5 for adults, with children free.

Nelson Vintage Car Club’s Swap Meet is back for 2016 and it’s the perfect opportunity to uncover some second hand or new gems. The event successfully debuted last year as a fundraiser for their new club rooms at the Nelson Speedway Association track on Lansdowne Rd. The swap meet is also a great platform for those looking to sell their items to a larger audience than they might normally receive at a garage sale. The Nelson Vintage Car Club also welcomes new members to join their group of local car enthusiasts. A vintage car is classed as anything over thirty years old, although owning a vintage car is not a requirement to join. The group offers people far more than a social meeting and the odd car rally, it is a network of people passionate about vintage vehicles, not only in Nelson, but stretching throughout the country. The Nelson Vintage Car Club is a branch of a national organisation, although Nelson members were originally part of the Canterbury branch. Nelson berries help fuel top triathletes Nelson-based berry fruit company Sujon is excited about playing a small role in keeping world champion triathlete Javier Gomez Noya on top of the podium. Javier, who won his fifth world championships last year and a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics, has been using Sujon’s blackcurrant products as a sports supplement for the last year. The Spanish athlete was introduced to the product by his New Zealand partner, triathlete Anneke Jenkins, and last month the pair visited Sujon’s headquarters in Tahunanui to meet the team and pick up some more of their products. “Anneke has been using our blackcurrant products for the last three years and she introduced them to Javier a year ago,” Sujon national sales manager Colin Stuart says. “We can’t say if they made a difference or not but he did have an exceptional year on the ITU circuit.” Colin says he met Anneke and Javier in Tauranga in November and helped arrange their visit to Nelson in December when Javier was looking for a new training base for the northern winter. Although Javier was “really impressed” with Nelson, he has opted to train in South Africa because it is closer to the first race in the ITU series in Abu Dhabi in March. Colin says Sujon is delighted to add Javier to the growing list of “really big sporting names” who are using their blackcurrant products. He says the products have been

bucking bulls and broncs. There was some finesse and glamour as well, with the barrel racers showing speed and skill and Australian Rodeo Queen Latoya Ward enchanting the crowd of around 1700. "The open bulls were tough," Richmond Rodeo Club secretary Tina Angus-Phyn says. "They were well-rested after the Can-

terbury Rodeo was cancelled and Ernie Rika was the only rider who could stay on." Tina says Latoya, who was a special guest at the rodeo, was a big hit. "Everyone loved her. She wandered around the crowd and talked to the spectators - she was delightful." Latoya was busy signing autographs and presenting sashes to the winners of the Miss Cowgirl and Mr Cowboy contest. Proud grandad and Nelson rodeo veteran Mike Reedy's grandchildren, Jessie, two, and
Sam Barlow, five, won the Miss Cowgirl Pre-school and Mr Cowboy Primary School. Unfortunately, there was also some unwanted drama with one cowboy breaking his leg when the bull he was sitting on charged at the gates in the mounting pen. The rider was thrown from the bull as soon as the gates opened and managed to limp to safety. The bull was also injured and had to be put down, which Tina says is a rare occurrence at the Richmond Rodeo. "I can't remember the last time we had a rider or animal injured. It doesn't happen
very often but when it does it's handled very professionally by the vets and medical staff." James Pinfold won the bare back bronc, Paul Robinson, Graeme Gannon and Ross Dowling were first equal in the saddle bronc, Justine Davis won the barrel racing and Len Mackey and Nye Harborne won the teaming roping. Tina says they were pleased with the crowd which was treated to a "longer than usual" programme after a rush of late entries. "It was a brilliant crowd. They were enthusiastic and stayed right to the end."

Jessie Johnston Friday night marked the start of the Nelson Weekly Regatta Week and five days of exciting sailing competition in the Tasman Bay. The inaugural Liquorland Top of the South Trailer Yacht and Speed Boat Regatta began with an invitational race on Friday night, offering waterfront diners a sailing spectacle as crews completed three laps of the harbour. The local and visiting boats then went on to compete on both Saturday and Sunday in Tasman Bay, before their regatta came to a close with prize-giving on Sunday evening. Winners of the Trailer Yacht competition, based on a handicap, was Rattle & Hum. Skipper Craig Welsh says he was thrilled with the competition. "The weather was great, the sailing was fair and the club has been really friendly and welcoming," he says. "We'll be back." For winning the competition, the Christchurch-based team won the "Rum Cup", which was donated by Nelson Weekly. The cup came with a bottle of rum for the winners to enjoy from the cup. In second place was Honk n Jack and in third was Nelson-based Eagle. Eagle skipper Mark Howard says he was thrilled to have out-of-town boats to sail against. "We've got a growing trailer yacht fleet and until now we haven't had a regatta, we've had to travel out of town."

He says this event will only get more popular because it is a form of sailing that's "affordable". "It's an entry level to get into sailing, it's not expensive but they're fast. They're fun and responsive and you don't have to store them at the marina. You just take them with you." By introducing the Liquorland Top of the South Trailer Yacht and Speed Boat Regatta to the sailing calendar, hosts Tasman Bay Cruising Club hope to give out-of-town sailors the chance to spend some time cruising and competing around the beautiful Tasman Bay and Abel Tasman National Park. The event then dovetails into the annual Nelson Regatta which has been running since 2009 for local and visiting
keel boats. The annual Wellington to Nelson race left Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club on Friday afternoon, acting as a feeder race for the Nelson Regatta which officially kicked off in Sunday. On Monday, keel boat crews raced their way to Torrent Bay, while today will see them compete in a short race round Tonga Island before making their way up through the national park and coming to rest in Tarakohe Harbour. A 10am start on Wednesday brings the crews back home to Nelson for the much anticipated prize-giving where accumulated points from all their races will determine a winner for both division 1 (Romeo) and division 2 (Juliet). Results from the keel boat racing will be in next week's Weekly.
